Gay Athens Past & Present
This walk promises an eye-opening journey through the streets of Athens that have witnessed the trials and triumphs of gay life. Hear about and see the sites associated with gay life in antiquity, the haunts of the notorious romantic poet Lord Byron (who had a crush on an Athenian youth), the aesthetic poetry of Constantine Cavafy, and the homoerotic art of Yannis Tsarouchis among others. Learn about 20th century underground gay life in the neighborhoods frequented by contemporary writers. During our walk we will saunter through the areas where today’s gay community socializes.
